Din Tai Feng

I went to the legendary Din Tai Feng to eat dinner yesterday.  I have been to the one in Arcadia but people tell me its just not the same.

Consensus: Nanxiang Restaurant in Shanghai had better xiaolongbao, hands down.  I also prefer the xiaolongbao at the Arcadia one.  I think its because the other two restaurants are not as big so their dumplings taste more fresh.  This Din Tai Feng had multiple floors and an inordinate amount of tables.  Tourists from all over the world were lined up, waiting to try their famous dumplings.

Din Tai Feng has some pretty darn good vegetables, though I can’t compare them with Nanxiang because we didn’t order any greens that day.  Between the three restaurants (Nanxiang in Shanghai, DTF Arcadia, and DTF Taipei), service was best at this Din Tai Feng (I went to the flagship store in Taipei).  I don’t remember the service at the Arcadia one being that great but yesterday’s service was reminiscent of a Michelin rated restaurant.  The waitresses (they were all female for some reason) were all so polite and nice and went out of their way to make us comfortable.  They would refill my tea every few sips and survey the room constantly for any customer interaction.  It was almost as if they had too many people but it made for an overall good experience.
